Engineers from network operator Electricity North West started replacing underground electricity cables stretching 300 metres along Nook Lane in Golborne yesterday.

The work, which will affect the supply to more than 4,000 properties in the area, will see cables which have been in place since around the 1950s replaced by larger electricity cables.

Engineers decided to carry out the work now after issues with the existing cables caused power cuts in the area, affecting homes, businesses and other properties.

Paul McMahon, who is overseeing the work in Golborne for Electricity North West, said: “As the power network operator for the North West, we want to provide the very best service to our customers.

“We recognised a fault on the underground network in Golborne and made the decision to carry out this work straight away.

“We’re investing £30,000 which will see engineers replace several underground electricity cables and the work will help reinforce the power network in Golborne.

“I want to thank the people of Golborne for their patience and support as we carry out the work on Nook Lane.

Power cuts can happen for a number of reasons, some of which are outside of our control, but this work will help make supplies more secure in future and allow us to restore power more quickly if there is a fault elsewhere on the network.”

A lot of the work will take place on grass verges and towards the end of the project, temporary traffic lights and a road crossing from Nook Lane to Stonecross Lane will be used, which will allow engineers to carry out the work safely.

The project is expected to be completed in two weeks.
