On its Twitter account, Electricity North West said: "Engineers have now restored all supplies in the area. We're really sorry to anybody affected this morning and thanks for your patience whilst we've worked to repair the fault."

Neighbourhood forum Standish Voice said it had received reports of shops in the town centre having to close and traffic lights not working.

Lois Rowland, a Standish resident, told Standish Voice: "Crossroads are bedlam, avoid! Aldi and lots of other shops have had to shut."

Another resident reported on Twitter that house alarms were going off across the town.

Another said: "The traffic lights in Standish are out, it's chaos".
