A Covid-19 support group has spread some Christmas cheer with the delivery of seasonal flowers to those they have supported this year.

Standish Coronavirus Help, which launched at the start of the pandemic, is behind the act of kindness.

The scheme looked after up to 100 people who could not leave their homes from the start of the first lockdown.

And its volunteers have been helping to care for some still wary about going to public places, such as for shopping, ever since.

Dozens of poinsettias were delivered at the weekend to people on the help list across the village after they were sourced by Kerry Docherty, from Standish’s Wild Flowers florist.

They were paid for by the crowdfunder set up by Standish Coronavirus Help - which consists of residents’ group Standish Voice and the village’s three councillors, Adam Marsh, Debbie Parkinson and Ray Whittingham.

They were delivered by Standish 14-year-old Louie Martland as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award and his mum, Jo - complete with festive outfits.

So far the crowdfunder has raised more than £3,000 for essentials that elderly people and other vulnerable groups may need if they are shielding or self-isolating.

Coun Marsh said the delivery of the flowers was a little token to show the community that support is still available.

He said the feedback had been lovely and thanked everyone who had made the initiative happen.

He said: “We were so pleased to be able to give a small present to all those who have turned to us for support across Standish this year.

“It is a little token to show how our community is still thinking about them and how Standish Coronavirus Help is still here if they need our support.

He added: “We have had some lovely feedback and thanks for everyone who made this happen.”
