The organisation has launched the campaign to get the 140 seats for the cinema sponsored as the Covid-19 lockdown has put a stop to almost its entire programme of events, which it uses to generate income.

Actor and charity patron Matthew McNulty helped to get the fund-raising ball rolling with a video message of support, which can be seen on social media.

Leigh Film Society is hoping support from the public will help to get the cinema-building project across the finishing line.

The charity’s chairman Paul Costello said: “Covid-19 has severely affected our income and fund-raising ambitions and we are currently closed, but we are trying to create a unique community cinema at the iconic Spinners Mill in Leigh.

“To help complete this dream of a project we’re asking the community, cinema enthusiasts and local businesses to sponsor a cinema seat.

“Sponsors will have their names on a plaque attached to a seat. They can become part of the furniture and forever associated with this amazing community cinema project.”

Leigh Film Society believes the facility at the Spinners Mill will be one of the first of its kind in the entire North West if it can be got up and running.

The charity already has the seats to install as it was offered 140 chairs from the London Science Museum’s IMAX cinema.

A team of volunteers travelled down to the capital city to dismantle the cinema and bring all the seats back to the borough.

Although all public screenings are off the agenda due to the Covid-19 restrictions, Leigh Film Society has been running a lockdown scheme delivering bags of DVDs to the doorsteps of people self-isolating and organisations such as care homes.

The cinema seats are £100 each to sponsor. To find out more about helping the society in this way, please ring Elizabeth Costello on 07969 647466.
