The “forces sweetheart” passed away on Thursday at the age of 103 after a remarkable international singing career.

As tributes flooded in from around the world, leaders at Aspull British Legion decided that they would honour her memory by flying the union flag at half mast until the day of her funeral.

Aspull-New Springs councillor John Hilton, an RBL member, said: “Dame Vera will have a special place in so many people’s hearts and it seems appropriate to fly the standard at half mast at the legion.

“There aren’t many of them left now, but I have talked to local members of the Burma Star Association in the past who recalled her going over to the Far East to perform for them during the war and what a huge morale-booster that was.”
