Flashback to the late great Lester Piggott's first ever race - at Haydock Park

Caroline Heaven admits the jockey, who died this week aged 86, was “like Marmite,” but she has always been a huge admirer and bought this image of Piggott aged 12 at his father Ernest’s stables on the day of his first race at Haydock Park.

Coincidentally Piggott’s final ever ride was on the same course which straddles Wigan and St Helens boroughs.
