Scaffolding will start to be removed from Haigh Hall as external work on the grade II*-listed development nears completion.

It marks the end of the first major phase of Wigan Council’s multi-million-pound masterplan to transform the landmark into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination.

Contractors HH Smith have been carrying out the work – which includes repairing the stonework, windows, doors and roof and restoring the glass dome and chimneys – since 2023 on behalf of Wigan Council.

Coun Chris Ready, the council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “I’d like to thank HH Smith for their commitment and dedication to this project over the last 18 months. Their workmanship and attention to detail is second to none and I’m looking forward to seeing the hall in all its glory when the scaffolding comes down.

“As part of our community wealth building strategy, we’re committed to working with local contractors who believe in investing in our local community and HH Smith have embraced this philosophy, employing apprentices, offering work experience, sourcing local sub-contractors and giving back whenever they can.”

The first section of scaffolding will be removed next month, with it all expected to have gone by spring.

World-renowned project managers and consultants AtkinsRéalis have recently been appointed to lead on the interior design phase, with Stirling
