Red flags bearing the club’s emblem were on display on Heath Street in Golborne yesterday morning as 50-year-old Dave Crowther made his final journey.

The procession set off from his mother’s home on Barton Street and made the short trip to St Thomas’ Church.

Only 10 people were allowed to attend the funeral service due to the coronavirus lockdown, so his friends instead lined the street to say goodbye as the procession passed.

His family had asked them to wear Liverpool FC merchandise or something else red to symbolise his passion for the team.

The hearse carrying Dave’s coffin also had a floral arrangement spelling LFC.

The football-themed tribute was a fitting way to remember Dave, who went to his first Liverpool FC match at the age of 10.

He became a dedicated fan, having a season ticket for more than 30 years and watching matches both home and away.

He was part of four generations of his family to become loyal supporters of the team and was at Hillsborough Stadium on the day of the disaster 31 years ago.

Dave, who was born and raised in Golborne, was the son of Doreen and Albert and had three brothers.

He is survived by his three children: Kenny, 29, Albie, 11, and eight-year-old Imogen.

He had numerous jobs, including transporting people from prison to court and working in a butcher’s shop.

After his death, his sister-in-law Michelle Crowther-Brown said: “He was fun and always opinionated. He loved to put things on Facebook and wind up people, he was a proper joker. He would wind up people and even when he was wrong, he would be right because he would twist it. He loved winding people up on Facebook and getting lots of comments.”

Dave died on April 8 from a suspected heart attack.

An online fund-raising appeal was set up to raise money for his funeral and to support his children.

A total of £6,500 has been donated so far and money can still be given at www.gofundme.com/f/to-help-the-family-of-david-brown-crowther.
