Matthew Corbett, 29, was badly injured when the off-road motorcycle he was riding collided with a car on Spa Road, Atherton, near the junction with Everest Road, at around 7.15pm on Monday, June 15.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, but medics could not save him and he died on Friday.

A makeshift shrine of balloons, flowers and other items has since been created on Spa Road in memory of the dad, who lived in Astley.

Police are investigating what happened and the driver of the car, who stopped at the scene, is helping officers with their inquiry.

PC Darren White, of Greater Manchester Police's serious collision investigation unit, said on Friday: “Despite the best efforts of emergency services and hospital staff, the rider of the motorcycle has sadly passed away in hospital. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time.

“An investigation is under way and the driver of the car is assisting us with our enquiries but, as ever, I would appeal to anyone with information or dash cam footage which may help us to get in touch.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
