Older Wigan residents encouraged to grow vegetables

The project aims to help residents make the most of the time they currently have to spend at home by developing their green fingers.

Free vegetable seeds are being given out and the progress of the future harvest will then be monitored throughout February and March.

The project is handing out Funky Veg Kits which will enable Wiganers to grow a rainbow selection of yellow courgettes, purple carrots, red Brussels sprouts, rainbow-coloured Swiss chard and stripy tomatoes.

FAcT project worker Sarah-Jane Tarn said: “We have more time at home so it is a great idea to make the most of it and try growing vegetables for the first time or just give some new varieties a go.

“We hope that people who get the kits will join us as part of a virtual growing club charting their progress.

“They can share updates through photos, videos or just letting us know how they are getting on.

“There will also be Zoom sessions, tips on growing and cooking the vegetables, and these will be taking place in the coming weeks.”

There are a limited number of the free kits available so they will be distributed to the first people to come forward.

Anyone who isn’t lucky enough to get one of the kits can find details of the seeds, get their own, and still join the virtual growing club.
