Fire crews who attended the incident said a woman was also taken to hospital.

Constable Simon Venguedasalon of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the driver and his family while he remains in hospital.

“We’re keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to the collision or captured dash cam footage that can assist our investigation.

“If you can help, please get in touch as soon as possible.”

An air ambulance helicopter was called but both casualties were taken to hospital by road.

Firefighters said it looked like the car had rolled a couple of times before coming to rest on its wheels.

The woman was out of the vehicle when they arrived but had suffered severe cuts and bruises.

Fire crews from Wigan station and the technical rescue unit from Leigh attended and were there for around an hour.
