The information has been amassed by Property Detective and its findings shared exclusively with the JPIMedia Data Unit.

M29 scored 74 out of 100 for starting a family, better than anywhere else in Wigan borough, and also topped the table for raising a family on 79.

However, that was well short of the region’s most family-friendly postcodes with part of Chorley scoring a perfect 100 for raising a family and an area in the north of Bolton getting 98 as a place to begin bringing up youngsters, the best score in the country.

The number-crunchers at Property Detective looked at factors ranging from access to schools to maternity units.

A spokesperson for Property Detective said: “The best postcode districts to start and raise a family scored very highly based on top-rated nurseries as well as primary and secondary education, with very good availability of local amenities.”

The report took into account the availability, quality and proximity of amenities and services within the postcode, including schools, nurseries, parks and playgrounds, maternity units, NCT groups, chemists and shops.

According to this model, the best places for families in the North West are in Bolton, Chorley, Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Wirral.

Milton Keynes, Maidstone, Windsor and Maidenhead, Barnsley and Rotherham were among the places which made it into the national top 10.
