The Face of Wigan turns purple for race justice

Prominent buildings and landmarks across the borough were lit up purple to show support for the family of George Floyd who was killed by police in America.

Prominent buildings and landmarks across the borough were lit up purple to show support for the family of George Floyd who was killed by police in America.

The Face of Wigan was one of a number of important locations in Wigan and Leigh which also displayed the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on a weekend in which mass anti-racism protests were held across the UK.

Other borough locations lit up purple included the Leigh Sports Village (LSV) and The Turnpike in Leigh.

Thousands gathered in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester to protest racial discrimination and injustice as local authorities across the region lit buildings purple in support.

A Wigan Council spokesperson said: “We stand in solidarity with all those across the world who face racism or other forms of prejudice.”
