Wigan couple waiting to tie the knot enjoy unusual 'non-wedding' in their street

With groom Ian Yates standing next to his fiancee Laura Hutchinson in a T-Rex outfit and a neighbour’s son leading the service, the fun event in Winstanley didn’t quite have the solemnity and gravitas of the real thing.

The happy couple exchanged light-hearted vows and Haribo rings before they were not pronounced husband and wife in front of their neighbours in Hilgay Close.

The unusual event came about after the cul-de-sac enjoyed the VE Day street party so much that they began searching for another excuse to celebrate together.

And when Ian, 46, and Laura, 36, confessed that they should have been getting married at a venue in Cheadle on June 6, the date was set.

Neighbours Lisa Brown and Janet Cooper took on the role of wedding planners and produced a cake, a Mr and Mrs quiz for Ian and Laura and street bingo.

Neighbour Kris Clarke stepped in as best man, also in a T-Rex outfit.

Ian said: “We had a makeshift aisle and wrote a ceremony with a fun twist.

“I got married in a dinosaur suit and Laura went casual with a specially-made T-shirt.

“It’s all good fun and continued the community spirit that has built up over the past few weeks.”

The day was also a joint celebration with a couple on the street celebrating 50 years of married happiness.

Laura and Ian met through Wigan Harriers athletics club.

They have also set a date of October 23 at Oddfellows on the Park at Bruntwood Hall in Cheadle for their actual wedding.
