Tasha Davies, 28, had no idea that she was expecting, even telling staff at Wigan Infirmary that she was not pregnant after being rushed there with stomach pains.

But just one hour after discovering she was indeed having a baby, her son Alexander Isaac Gohan Hern was born, weighing 9lb 70z.

It was a massive surprise for Tasha and her partner Martin Hern, who have been together for more than three years but did not plan to have children for another decade.

Martin, 29, said: “It was completely gobsmacking. I was more in shock than anything, because it all happened so quickly and neither of us saw it coming. We didn’t plan on having children for another 10 years.”

Tasha and Martin bought a house in Standish in Friday and had started moving their belongings into it.

But they were at Martin’s dad’s house in Orrell on Monday when she started having stomach pains.

They went to bed but Tasha complained several times during the night of being in pain and decided she would see a doctor in the morning.

But the pain became unbearable and they decided to go to hospital, arriving at Wigan Infirmary’s A&E unit at around 6am on Tuesday.

Tasha was seen by a triage nurse and wheeled away to be treated, while Martin waited in a corridor.

He said: “Fifteen minutes later a nurse came in the corridor and shouted my name. She said she had gone into labour and was taking her to the delivery suite.

“I honestly didn’t know what to think. It was so surreal. I went to bed that night thinking I was going to pick up a washer-dryer and take it to the house, and instead I was going to the hospital to find out I was having a baby boy.”

Alexander was born at 7.29am and was completely healthy, despite his surprise arrival.

“It’s crazy the fact that we didn’t know about it and everything has gone so smoothly,” Martin said.

The couple were stunned to become parents for the first time and had not suspected a pregnancy, as Tasha had continued menstruating.

Martin said: “It’s lockdown and she had put on a bit of weight, but we both honestly thought it was just lockdown snacking. There was no pregnancy bump or anything to suggest there was a baby.”

They even blamed snacking when a neighbour asked if Tasha was pregnant three months ago.

She was due to return to work as a paralegal on Tuesday after being on annul leave, but instead Martin called to tell her colleagues she had become a mum.

With the help of family and friends, he has since been rushing around to get clothes and other essentials for Alexander so they can begin life as a family in their new home.
