Pete Ashcroft and nine-year-old Diana decided to follow the Couch to 5k training programme, which involves sessions of running and walking over 10 weeks until they can run 5km non-stop.

They are raising money for the One House in Aspull, where Pete is the chairman. The centre is closed at the moment, but it is being used as a volunteer hub during the crisis and needs money to keep operating.

They are well on their way to meeting their £1,500 fund-raising target, with donations already surpassing £1,200.

The challenge has provided a good focus, particularly for Aspull Church Primary School pupil Diana.

Pete, 42, who lives in Aspull, said: “It’s really good for her. There are benefits that we didn’t realise when we signed up.

“She is off school and struggling with routine, but it’s really taught her about setting targets in life and being accountable. There are days when she doesn’t want to go running, but I have explained she has committed to doing something.”

The pair plan to run 5km on Saturday, July 11, possibly at parkrun if the event has resumed.

Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."
