McGuire Co-op Funeralcare traditionally invites people into its Gidlow Lane branch to place a memorial tag for a loved one on its Christmas tree.

As Covid-19 restrictions prevent crowds of people from coming into the business’ premises it has therefore decided to put a Christmas tree outside for the community.

Funeral director James Pilkington said: “It has been a difficult year for a lot of people and Christmas can often be an especially hard time for those that have lost someone close to them.

“We hope this memorial tree can offer some comfort to those who have experienced loss.

“We want to encourage the community to write their messages and place a tag, bauble, ribbon or any other tribute on the special tree in memory of their loved one.”

The funeral home is also offering to write the messages and place them on the tree for members of the community who may not be able to visit in person. A beautiful Christmas-themed display has also been installed in the branch’s bay windows.

Called A Light for a Life, each shining light in the star represents the families and their loved ones that the funeral home has taken care of this year.

There is also a symbolic empty chair in the Christmas display along with the poem Christmas in heaven, which the business hopes will offer particular comfort to families facing their first Christmas without someone special being present.

The window display has been put together by funeral arranger Adele Hughes.

The business also thanked Brimelow Farm on Gidlow Lane for donating the outside tree.
