Matt Peet created Behind A Smile after battling depression for several years and wanting to do something to support others in a similar situation.

He designed the logos and came up with the words which now adorn a range of T-shirts and bags.

And in the midst of an unprecedented nationwide lockdown, Matt is on a mission to support the mental wellbeing of anyone who might struggle with being confined to their home for so long.

The “Share A Smile” project involves people doing just that, placing a smiley logo in their windows as a symbol of solidarity with other residents.

The 33-year-old, from Shevington, said: “We’re trying to give people, mainly children, something to do while they are off, and to show a bit of solidarity between people who are stuck indoors.

“It’s to give people a bit of reassurance that they’re not on their own.

“So far it’s been quite a positive response. It’s just a shame everyone has to stay in because I think people are going to suffer, but hopefully with these signs they might see a bit of a glimmer of hope.

People can just put a sign up and send us a picture and we’ll re-post it.”

Matt added: “I think it’s just nice to keep spirits up and stop the mundane.

“For some people, it’s going to be crucial to have that contact.

“Loneliness is going to be quite a large issue. It was before Covid-19 and now it’s even more of an issue. People won’t get to see their relatives as much, so if the community can rally around and share this, people can see it and realise they’re not alone.

“It’s a massive test on everyone’s mental health, when you’re restricting movement.

“It’s putting more and more strain on the average person as well as the NHS.

“Everyone is feeling it and I don’t want everyone to forget about focussing on keeping your mind healthy.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
