Fur Clemt aims to “feed bellies not bins”, taking food that would otherwise go to waste and putting it on plates in homes across the borough and in its cafe.

It has played a crucial role during the Covid-19 crisis, supporting Wigan Council and community groups in getting food to those in need, as well as tackling food waste.

Shirley Southworth and Katy Brittain, directors of Fur Clemt, are behind the project and are delighted to be able to add to the existing offering with home-grown, local produce.

They have been supported by councillors Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities and housing, and Ron Conway, chairman of the health and social care scrutiny committee.

Ms Brittain said: “The allotment is a great asset to Fur Clemt. We are not only growing fresh food, which saves money and promotes healthy eating, we are also acting as a community hub for young and old, so volunteers at Fur Clemt can work on the allotment outside when the sun shines and inside when it rains. It ticks all the boxes.”

Ms Southworth said: “Chris and Ron have been great helping us to help others. Whether it’s Covid-19 or not, we are always here and we look forward to welcoming volunteers to work on the allotment.”

Coun Ready said: “We thank all of our community groups who have done a fabulous job in providing local support during the Covid-19 crisis; the number of new volunteers across the borough is incredible. Fur Clemt are a real support and encouragement for all our local groups and we are delighted to provide our support and encouragement.”

Coun Ron Conway said: “With my health hat on, this really does make a difference in so many ways, and I can’t wait to come back to see all the fruit and veg when it’s grown”.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
