While many Wiganers were looking forward to their first haircut since March, eight-year-old Macy Murrell was excited for her trim for an altogether different reason.

That’s because she donated an impressive 46cm of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, the charity which takes donations of real hair to create wigs for young people battling cancer.

And in doing so, she also raised more than £700 for the charity thanks to generous donations from family, friends and well-wishers.

Macy, who attends St John’s Primary school in Pemberton, had her trim last week at Creations Hair and Barbering in Orrell, a new salon which opened earlier this month but will celebrate its official launch next weekend.

Her proud mum Hannah said: “A couple of weeks into lockdown, after a discussion about Macy struggling with the length of her hair and how painful it was, she decided to have it cut and donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust, to help a child that had lost their hair.

“She also decided she wanted to initially raise the minimum amount it can cost to make a wig which was £550.

“The first day she raised £400 and has since smashed her target and is now at £740 on her JustGiving page.

“Macy took pride in her hair as it was so long and thick, but struggled daily as she is incredibly hair sore.

“So once this was decided it was an exciting time, and Macy couldn’t wait to have her hair cut.”

She added: “Macy is extremely proud of what she has achieved, and absolutely loves her new hair style.”
