A generous schoolgirl from Wigan underwent the severest possible haircut to help young children who have lost their locks to cancer therapy or illness.

Twelve-year-old Zainab Rehman had her head shaved by her parents and who then donated her beautiful, very long tresses to Little Princess Trust.

They were made into wigs for children and young adults who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions.

This is the second time Zainab, a Standish High School student, has donated her hair to the charity, the first being when she was in Year 4.

Mum Nazia Rehman, from Bickershaw, said: “Zainab had no personal reasons for wanting to do this but she came across pictures of children who had no hair.

“She wanted to find out why they didn’t and discovered that they can lose it from undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

“She did the same thing when she was in year four at Bickershaw Primary School as her hair is very long, so thought she might as well do it again, especially with it being lockdown, So her dad Aatif and I shaved her hair in April during lockdown.”

Since having her head shaved, it has grown back and Nazia said that Zainab would probably take on the challenge for a third time.

Nazia said: “We are very proud of her and she’s the type of person who does like to help charity and support others.

“In the past she’s collected money for her school which has gone to Cancer Research.

“She loved the challenge and I’m sure she’d do something like this again in the future.”

Standish High School also paid tribute to Zainab.

In a Facebook post, a spokesman wrote: “We are very proud of our year eight student Zainab who at the start of lockdown, in April, had her head shaved by her parents and who then donated her beautiful, very long hair to Little Princess Trust.

“The hair was made into wigs for children and young adults who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions.

“This is the second time Zainab has donated her hair to this fabulous charity, the first when she was in Year 4.

“This selfless act has helped young people throughout the UK and Ireland who are experiencing the devastating effects of hair loss to be provided with real-hair wigs."
