“They have made almost 2,000 to date and with the help of Standish councillor Deborah Parkinson they have been delivered to a range of hospitals, care homes, and doctors’ surgeries across Wigan and the North West.

“They have used every last piece of acetate in school so production has now had to stop.”

And it’s not the only thing the school has been up to, as while most children have been doing work at home during lockdown - some have been going into school throughout all this. The children of key workers have been going to school each day as usual - and have been doing a number of interesting things as well as their normal studies. Activities have seen them sprucing up the school, gardening and crafting.

The school said: “Every morning, staff at Standish Community High School welcome some students in to school.

“These students have been studying and completing the work set by their teachers, just like the students working hard at home, but since Easter they have been very busy with some extra tasks and challenges.

“Staff and students have been clearing and tidying the Peace Garden and painting benches.

“A huge thank you to Wickes in Wigan for donating the Cuprinol paint and to Lovania Nurseries and APC for their kind donation of plants, alpine perennials, other seasonal plants, pots and baskets.

The school added: “The students have also enjoyed producing bunting to celebrate VE Day, improving their ball skills and making thumb pot monsters.”
