Wigan Youth Zone shortlisted for award
The youth facility on Parson's Walk is in the running for a prize at the prestigious Children and Young People Now Awards 2020.
Wigan Youth Zone has been nominated for The Youth Work Award due to its efforts helping young Wiganers during the Covid-19 pandemic and several national lockdowns.
The centre quickly adapted its offer to engage with young people in Wigan and Leigh during the unprecedented events of last year.
The successful Virtual Youth Zone put on events including a full schedule of fitness, cookery, arts and crafts, music activities, fun challenges and games.
Anthony Ashworth-Steen, executive director at Wigan Youth Zone, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been nominated. We understand that competition was extremely tough and therefore to have been shortlisted is a tremendous achievement and testament to the exceptionally hard work from the whole organisation throughout the initial lockdown and during the transition back to face-to-face work.
"We are proud to showcase on a national level what we are doing for the young people in Wigan and Leigh, it is both changing the lives of thousands of young people and is ground-breaking.”
Now in their fifth year, the awards recognise the remarkable work carried out by youth work charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands.
In light of the current situation the awards ceremony will take place virtually.
The winners will be announced at the Children & Young People Now Awards 2020 on Thursday March 4 at 4pm. The ceremony will be streamed live on the awards organisation's website as well as on YouTube and Facebook.
