Police close road after serious collision

Police officers have shut down a busy borough road this afternoon after a serious collision.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area around Liverpool Road in Ashton, following the incident which occurred earlier today, August 17. The collision is unrelated to an earlier incident which occurred nearby on the M6.

The road is shut between J24 of the M6 motorway and the junction with Warrington Road.

The police are urging anyone travelling Southbound on the M6 to NOT leave the motorway at J24 unless absolutely necessary.

A statement from GMP Wigan West said: "Officers are currently assisting with a serious road traffic collision on Liverpool Road, Ashton in Makerfield. This is in addition to the serious collision on the M6 Motorway.

"Liverpool Road is currently CLOSED between J24 of the M6 Motorway and the Warrington Road junctions.

"Please avoid this area where possible.

"Anyone travelling Southbound on the M6 is advised not to leave the Motorway at junction 24 unless absolutely necessary."
