PC Derek Fessey, the officer investigating, said: “On Wednesday, 30 September three men and a woman boarded a train at Wigan North Western intending to travel to St Helens. At just after midnight the guard walked through the carriages, and on meeting the group found they didn’t have any tickets or money.

“The guard ejected the group at Bryn. As they were leaving the train, the offender turned abusive and then spat on him.”

“This was a disgusting thing to do to a guard who was simply doing his job. We want to speak to the man pictured in this image as we believe he can help our investigation. Can you name him?”

A spokesperson for Northern Rail said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to abuse on our network, whether that is towards our staff or our customers. Each Northern Rail employee has the right to work in a safe environment and every customer is entitled to travel without fear for their safety.

“We work closely with BTP to deter such incidents and whilst they are rare, we take them very seriously. We’d urge anyone with any further information about this incident to contact BTP immediately.”
