Police probe terraced house blaze in Leigh

Neighbours have been allowed to return to their homes after a blaze at a Leigh home.

Police and sniffer dogs have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire at the terraced address in Firs Lane which was first reported to the emergency services shortly after 4pm on Tuesday.

Adjoining homes were evacuated and Firs Lane was closed at its junction with Wigan Road during the rush hour as fire engines from Wigan, Hindley, Leigh and Atherton tackled the flames.

Both Transport for Greater Manchester and local police advised commuters to find alternative routes as the emergency continued.

Eventually the building was declared safe and residents of the nearby houses were allowed back home.
