More work is needed at a Wigan park which was revamped last year, it has been claimed
A former councillor is calling for more improvements at a Wigan park – just months after it received a makeover.
Ashfield Park, in Standish, reopened in December with new play equipment, an outdoor gym and wheelchair-accessible pathways.
Ray Whittingham, who recently stepped down after 10 years as a Conservative councillor for Standish with Langtree, said he was “very impressed” with the play equipment, but “shocked” by the condition of the park.
He says he suggested the installation of a wet pour surface, which is soft underfoot and can cushion the impact of falls, but outdoor carpeting was used instead, which he claims holds water and mud.

He is concerned by a lack of railings around the play area and says dogs regularly walk free there, despite signs saying they should be kept on leads.
Mr Whittingham said: “Prior to the refurbishment, there was an ample supply of double-sided seating benches where visitors could sit and have a picnic with their children. Not anymore.
"There is one existing double-sided bench which was surrounded by water when I was there.
“There are benches alongside the football pitch, probably around 50 metres away from the play area, and with multiple children on the play area it would be difficult to spot a child who had an accident and would no doubt take grandparents some time to reach their grandchildren.

"Consequently, adults must spend their visit to the park standing instead of relaxing whilst keeping an eye on the children or grandchildren.”
He is also unhappy about the condition of the football pitch, saying there are holes in the goal area, and claims toilets at the park have been closed for 20 years.
A Wigan Council spokesperson said: "Following input from local residents in Standish, a multi-play unit with brand-new equipment was unveiled at Ashfield Park last year, including a netted climbing frame, swings, see-saws, balance beams and more.
"Redesigned for all residents, an outdoor gym was also installed at the park, as well as wheelchair-accessible pathways, quiet zones and sensory textures for children with special educational needs.

"Building on this redevelopment, a contractor has now been appointed to improve the sports fields at Ashfield Park, and the council is also obtaining quotes to enclose the new play area with railings."
