And as a result, now markings will be emblazoned on the asphalt urging drivers to slow down.

The work is expected to be completed within the next two months.

Mr Grundy said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents regarding concerns for safety on Byrom Lane due to speeding vehicles.

“This comes as part of a wider problem of road safety right across the Leigh constituency.

“As a result, I have written to Wigan Council about this ongoing issue and they have now agreed to install a number of additional ‘SLOW’ road markings along Byrom Lane to remind drivers of the need to drive at an appropriate speed along this section of road.

“It is anticipated that these road markings will be installed within the next six to eight weeks, subject to the weather.”

He added: “Whilst this is just a small improvement, and much more needs to be done to improve road safety locally, I am hopeful that these new road markings will remind drivers to reduce their speed, which will in turn improve the safety of this road and provide some reassurance to local residents.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with local people and community groups in our local area to fight for the road safety improvements you want to see.”

However, some people fear the measures won’t be enough.

One local, Claire Baker, said: “It needs to be 30mph along this stretch and Plank Lane.

Traffic zooming past at 45mph is frightening.

“As most of the local fields have been built on, this circuit is now really busy pedestrian-wise.

“Slowing down signs will be ignored, sadly,”

Resident Stewart McGarrie added: “Waste of good money this.

“If you want to make a difference, get a speed camera installed.”
