Wigan independent councillor Bob Brierley dies after 'working tirelessly' for many years
Hindley Green’s long-standing independent councillor Bob Brierley has died.
Tributes have been paid after the death of a long-standing Wigan councillor.

It was announced on Monday that Hindley Green independent representative Coun Bob Brierley had died.
He was first elected to Wigan Council in 2004 as a member of the Community Action Party.
He lost his seat in 2007 by just 87 votes, but returned to the council the following year as an independent councillor.
Coun Brierley passionately represented Hindley Green ever since, often speaking out on matters and even getting stuck in when things needed doing, such as by cutting overgrown grass.
On Facebook, Lauren Howard said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved uncle Bob Brierley.
“Uncle Bob loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family. He had a special place in his heart for his nephews and niece, and the time he spent with them meant so much. The memories, laughter, stories and moments shared together will be treasured forever.
“He was a much-loved uncle, family member, son and brother and friend, and his loss leaves a huge hole in all of our hearts.
“You will be missed more than words can say, Uncle Bob Brierley. Thank you for all the love, laughter and memories. We will carry you in our hearts forever.”
Prime minister and Makerfield MP Andy Burnham said: “I’m deeply saddened to learn of Coun Bob Brierley’s passing. Bob dedicated his life to public service in the place he loved - Hindley Green.
“I’m grateful that I got to work with him over the years and always recognised his dedication to our people and communities. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
Council leader Coun Nazia Rehman said: "Coun Brierley was first elected to Wigan Council in 2004, serving his community for more than two decades. He was always a strong voice and a committed advocate for the ward he represented.
"While we did not always share the same political views and opinions, it was always clear how passionate Bob was about serving his community and supporting the people who elected him.
"My thoughts are with his family, friends and all those who knew and worked alongside him at this difficult time."
A statement from Hindley and Hindley Green’s Labour councillors said: “Bob will always be remembered as a man who put Hindley Green at the heart of everything he did. Although people are probably unaware, we worked on a lot of issues across party over the years, recently the South Hindley development.
“Bob leaves behind a legacy that will last for many years to come. He was passionate about his community and always stood up for the people of Hindley Green. His passing will be a great loss, and he will be deeply missed by many across Hindley Green and Hindley.”
Coun James Fish, independent for Tyldesley and Mosley Common, said: “Bob dedicated many years to public service, proudly representing the residents of Hindley Green and working tirelessly on behalf of the community he cared so deeply about.
“It was a privilege to serve alongside Bob on Wigan Council. His passing is a sad loss to the council and to the community he represented.”
