Lancashire’s council-run day centres, which have reopened in recent months, will remain in operation during the current lockdown – in contrast to the first wave of the pandemic when the facilities were forced to shut.

Louise Taylor, Lancashire County Council’s executive director of adult services, told a meeting of the Lancashire health and wellbeing board that the services were “a vital lifeline for those who go [to the centres] and those who get respite because of their loved ones going”.

“Although we have gone into a lockdown…we do still intend to maintain that day centre provision during this period,” she said.

“We have been working proactively to get our day centres back open – that includes the ones that the county council directly operates and, equally, [we have been] working with the independent sector.

“The county council has been on a trajectory of opening our day centres back up – and we have supported the independent sector with some financial support.”

Members also heard that day centre staff would be prioritised for any future Covid testing pilots.
