Wigan Council employee gets Heart of Community award
Ste Fillingham has been praised for going above and beyond in keeping the streets spotless.
He was presented with the Heart of the Community award at the Makerfield depot by Aspull New Springs Whelley elected representatives Coun Chris Ready and Coun Ron Conway.
They spoke of how Ste, who is from Aspull, is a firm favourite with local residents for the friendly and personable way he speaks to them while going about his work keeping the area clean.
Coun Ready said: “We’ve had lots of comments, especially through Covid, about how amenable he is.
“He chats to people while working on tidying up the area and tackling grot spots.
“He goes over and above. When he’s done for the day he will go out there litter picking, and he drops bags off at people’s homes for them and then comes to collect the bags when they’re full.
“We just thought it would be nice to recognise him.
“People are quick to complain about council staff but we should say thank you and recognise when someone does a good job.”
Kathleen Marsh from the One House Community Centre in Aspull also praised Ste’s contribution.
She said: “Ste has been brilliant at supporting our centre on clean up days and is a fantastic ambassador for the council.”
