The Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux, is calling on local Conservative MPs to focus their attention on the health and wellbeing of residents and to direct their frustrations with the implementation of tighter restrictions to government.

The restrictions, which prevent different households meeting indoors and in gardens, are now legally binding, meaning that those who ignore the rules could face enforcement action.

Last week, local Conservative MPs wrote to Health Secretary, Matt Hancock to complain about how the new restrictions imposed by government were being implemented in the region.

In a statement issued today, Councillor David Molyneux, said: “Throughout the pandemic our residents have followed the guidelines and advice very carefully, which has led to us having one of the lowest infection rates.

“A lot of our residents, like us, are frustrated about the government’s lack of clarity and consistency throughout the pandemic. Making last minute announcements without any warning and providing insufficient information has not helped ease their confusion or frustration.

“New rules have been pushed on local government without any notice or involvement, leaving us to pick up the pieces and read between the lines without any power to influence the rules.

“Despite the way it’s been handled, we must concentrate on the task at hand rather than engage in political tit for tat when lives are at risk.

“My priority throughout the pandemic has been about putting people’s health first and I make no apology for making decisions that put the health and safety of our residents first. I suggest if the Conservative MPs are unhappy with the decisions their government have made then they take this up with them directly and allow us to get on with the task at hand.”
