Probe launched after campervan is deliberately set on fire in Wigan

Police are investigating after a campervan at a garage for repairs was deliberately set alight.

Firefighters were called to the business on Hartley Avenue in Wigan at around 11pm on Thursday after reports that the Vauxhall campervan was alight.

They spent an hour tackling the blaze but the vehicle was completely burnt out.

Witnesses reported that the fire had been started maliciously, so police were informed and an investigation launched.

Carl Gleaves, watch manager at Wigan fire station, said his team had a busy night and deliberate fires such as this kept them away from other incidents.

He said: "People should be vigilant and look out and be aware that, for whatever reason, people seem to be targeting vehicles."

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police on 101.
