Repair work to stop village flood problem

In wet weather there has been flooding at the crossroads on High Street, Standish, due to problems with a drain.

It meant that people shopping in the village and children on their way to school were splashed by vehicles travelling through the busy junction.

Standish with Langtree councillor George Fairhurst said: “People have been getting wet through. It’s been going on for well over 12 months.”

But the problem should be resolved soon, as Wigan Council will do work on Sunday to repair the drain.

Mark Tilley, assistant director for infrastructure and regulatory services at the council, said: “We are aware there has been a problem with this drain on High Street in Standish and the work will fix a damaged connection.

“ This work is scheduled to take place over one day from 8am to 5pm at the latest but as always this is dependent on the condition of the drain.

“During the work we ask motorists to bear with us as there may be some delays although there are no plans for temporary traffic lights. Traffic will be reduced to one line on the approach to Standish from High Street and Preston Road heading towards Wigan. All other roads at the junction should be unaffected by the work.”

The planned work has been welcomed by Coun Fairhurst, who has been calling for the repairs to be made with his fellow ward councillors.

He said: “We are really made up because it’s something that’s needed doing.”

He added: “People will be able to cross the road and stay dry. It will be a big improvement. Water won’t be standing there once the new drains are in.”
