A Wigan school council turns big plans into playground reality in this week's Class Act

Youngsters have turned their playground dreams into reality, after their school council raised funds to install new play equipment for pupils to enjoy for years to come.

Pupils at Billinge Chapel End Primary School are celebrating after opening brand-new play facilities designed to make playtimes even more enjoyable.

The school’s children’s council came up with the ambitious plans last year after setting out to find ways to improve playtime for their fellow pupils.

Working under the guidance of teacher Mr Montrose, the council decided to think big — with large-scale playground equipment at the top of their wish list.

The young representatives put their case forward in an impressive sales pitch to headteacher Mr Hewitt, who gave them the go-ahead to fundraise and organise the installation.

Throughout the year, the council worked hard to turn their vision into reality, meeting with different companies, comparing designs and deciding which equipment would best suit the school.

Once enough money had been raised, arrangements were made for the new facilities to be installed.

The finished equipment now takes pride of place in both the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 playgrounds, giving children across the school more opportunities to enjoy their breaks.

The new play areas officially opened to pupils in September and have already proved a big hit.

Mr Montrose said he was delighted to see the children’s ideas come to life and praised the council for its determination and achievements.

He said: “It is so pleasing to see that the children’s views and wishes are given a voice through the school council. I am so proud of what they have achieved.

“They have improved playtime enjoyment for the children here now, and for many years to come.”
