Slimmer's shame at turning to drug dealing

A woman, who turned to using amphetamine as a weight-loss method, wept in the dock after admitting drug-dealing offences.

A court heard that 45-year-old Donna Winstanley began taking the drug to help her lose weight and then when friends heard what she was doing they asked her to get them some too which she did.

After about six weeks police raided her home in Severn Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, last summer and found she had been supplying the drug and also cannabis.

Her barrister, Louse McCloskey said that Winstanley “is genuinely remorseful, ashamed and embarrassed to find herself in this position.”

Blonde haired Winstanley pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to possessing amphetamine and cannabis with intent to supply and simple possession of a small amount of cocaine.

Miss McCloskey said that Winstanley has no previous convictions and is sole carer for a young child, her husband having left a few years ago.

She had been “trying to bury her head in the sand” about her problems.

Judge Graham Morrow, QC, sentenced her to 32 weeks’ imprisonment which was suspended for 12 months.

He also ordered her to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and imposed an electronically-monitored curfew for six weeks between 7pm and 7am.
