Just weeks after the second Fifty Shades Of Grey film - Fifty Shades Darker - hit the cinemas, we can report how many people in the borough have needed help to get out of cuffs.

Days before the film was released in the UK, one man was taken to Wigan fire station by paramedics after being stuck in handcuffs for more than 24 hours.

His girlfriend had put them on his wrists one night but did not take them off.

The man was trapped for some time before a neighbour climbed through a window and used bolt cutters to cut the chain on the handcuffs.

But they could not remove the handcuffs from his wrists, which had started to swell.

It was the latest incident where firefighters have needed to help.

A Freedom Of Information request submitted by the Post has revealed that six people in the borough were freed from handcuffs by firefighters in the past three years.

There were three incidents in Hindley in 2014, two in Wigan in 2015 and one in Atherton last year.

Of those six, four people walked into the fire stations, while the other two were at a hospital and a police station.

Firefighters rescued 13 people stuck in handcuffs across Greater Manchester last year.

Paul Etches, Greater Manchester Fire And Rescue Service’s head of prevention, said: “While we are always happy to help, the time and money spent on these call outs could have been used far more usefully.

“Accidents will happen, but take a second to think about what you are doing and the potential harm you are putting yourself in.”
