Supermarket will continue to open 24 hours a day

The supermarket giant has announced plans to end 24-hour opening at 20 of its stores.

The Tesco Extra store on Central Park Way in Wigan will still open continuously from 6am on Monday to midnight on Saturday, as well as from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

But Tesco Extra in Leigh is among those that will no longer open 24 hours a day.

Tesco said the rise in popularity of online shopping meant it was no longer seeing many customers in stores overnight.

It announced in January that 76 of its stores would be hit by the move.

Tony Hoggett, Tesco UK chief operating officer, said: “We’re making some changes to the way a small number of our stores operate to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service to customers.

“Where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we will work with them to ensure they are fully supported.”

However, Wigan shoppers could be affected by the owner of the My Local convenience store chain announcing his intention to put the firm into administration, putting thousands of jobs at risk.

Greybull Capital has lined up accountancy giant KPMG to act as administrator to its chain of more than 100 stores, which employs 1,650 people.

The firm has branches on Woodhouse Lane, Springfield, and Wigan Road, Bryn.

Joanne McGuinness, national officer at union Usdaw, said: “My Local staff are devastated by the news that the company is going into administration. Having been sold by Morrisons last year, there was a mood of optimism that the new owners could turn around the business.

“We are talking with the company in a bid to save jobs and get the best deal for staff. In the meantime Usdaw is providing the support, advice and representation they need at this unsettling time.”
