Teen cyclist in critical condition after crash

A teenage cyclist is in hospital with life threatening injuries after the bike he was riding crashed with a car.

The crash between a grey Peugeot 3008 and the 16-year-old male cyclist happened on the A580 East Lancashire Road in Leigh on Wednesday.

Police were called at around 2.55pm to the collision close to the junction with Carr Lane.

The boy riding the bike suffered life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Peugeot remained at the scene and has assisted officers with their enquiries.

Motorists endured heavy delays through Leigh as diversions were put into place.

Nobody has been arrested and police are appealing to witnesses to provide further information.

Police Constable Phil Drummond, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “My thoughts are with the teenage boy who has suffered very serious injuries as a result of this collision and we are doing all we can to ascertain the circumstances of this incident.

“I appealing to anyone who may have been travelling along the East Lancashire Road around the Leigh area between 2.50pm and 3pm to come forward and assist with our investigation.

“In particular, we are interested in hearing from any road users who may have dash cam footage of the incident or the moments preceding the collision. Any information you have may prove to be of great importance.”
