Thai takeaway reveals plans for restaurant expansion

Owners of a popular Wigan takeaway are set to expand the business into a fully-fledged restaurant, a new planning application has revealed.

Siam House, a Thai takeaway in Standish, has submitted proposals to the town hall to provide an eat-in experience for lovers of its Asian cuisine.

The Church Street eatery has been a hit with Standish residents since it opened last summer.

It was the brainchild of Ed Jennings and partner Kannika Mahanam, who set up Siam House in the old Farrimonds chip shop premises.

Speaking to the Observer earlier this year, Ed said of the cuisine: “A lot of people haven’t even tried Thai food. A lot of people have a perception that it’s all spicy, but it’s quite the opposite.

“It’s fresh, it’s healthy, and there are no flavour enhancers like MSG. It’s home cooking but on a restaurant level.”

Blueprints outline a vision to take over the residential property next door, which is currently unoccupied, and creating two-floors of seating for around 45 people.

The home’s door would be removed and new windows put in to create new glass frontage for the restaurant.

The current takeaway premises will be converted into the restaurant’s kitchen.

A two-storey extension would also be fitted at the rear of the building to accommodate some of the tables.

The application is currently pending consideration, with a decision expected to be reached by mid-June.

If approved, the restaurant will join what could soon be a booming landscape of dining and drinking options for Standish residents.

The famous Albert’s pub and restaurant chain, which operates across Manchester, Worsley and Didsbury, will open its fourth location in School Lane, taking over the former Beeches Hotel which closed in mysterious circumstances last year.

The takeover of the property by Albert’s will involve partial demolition and alteration of existing buildings and several extensions, but there are no proposals to continue operating as a hotel.

The former Bel Air Hotel, in Wigan Lane, is also in the midst of being renovated and transformed into a restaurant and barto be called Forbes..

The restaurant and boutique hotel is due to open at the end of the month.
