It will be a case of Four to the Floor once again when one of Wigan's best-known musical exports plays a long-awaited hometown gig this summer.

Starsailor, who met at Wigan and Leigh College as music students and feature Spring View keyboardist Barry Westhead, will play the Robin Park indoor sports centre as they hit the road in support of their greatest hits album.

The group, completed by singer and guitarist James Walsh, bassist James Stelfox and drummer Ben Byrne, became one of the country’s best-known acts with songs such as Silence Is Easy and Four to the Floor propelling its first two albums towards the top of the charts.

The band will return to the borough where it all started after initially getting back together in 2014 to play a number of festivals following a five-year break.

The Wigan gig is the brainchild of promotions and events company Leisuretec and will see Starsailor take to the stage used for the prestigious Wigan International Jazz Festival.

Fans will want to move fast to snap up their places for the home coming as tickets for the gig in July go on sale on Monday.

Leisuretec director Phil Jameson said: “I saw Starsailor about 18 months ago in Warrington. They hadn’t played there for a long time and watching the gig I thought we could get them to perform in Wigan too.

“I know the band so I suggested it and they said they were all up for it. I wanted to put them on in Wigan last year and this time around it has worked out.

“They are one of the borough’s most successful acts so hopefully it will jog a few memories, fans will tell their friends about it and the tickets will start selling quickly.”

The band members have also said they are also looking forward to heading back to their roots for the Wigan appearance.

Keyboardist Barry, who now lives in Stockport with his family, said: “Looking forward to our homecoming gig. The boys are back in town.”

Starsailor sold more than three million albums as they became one of the biggest acts on the British scene in the early 2000s.

As well as success in the studio they opened up live for the likes of U2 and The Rolling Stones but called it a day after fourth album All The Plans in 2009.

Since getting together again the group has played festivals including V and the Isle of Wight and also played a gig at London’s world-famous Royal Albert Hall (RAH).

Starsailor are performing live this year ahead of the release of Good Souls: The Greatest Hits in September, which includes most of their best-known tracks as well as two new songs in Give Up The Ghost and ballad Hold On.

It is the second year in a row Leisuretec has arranged one-off concerts following the jazz festival, with up-and-coming country-rockers Jess and the Bandits headlining last year’s gig.

Support bands for the Robin Park event have yet to be announced.

Starsailor will play at Robin Park on July 13. Tickets will go on sale at 9am on Monday March 21 at www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/ZMI1307
