And staff at the Wrightington Hotel and Health Club are celebrating after notching up two nominations, for the large hotel of the year and business tourism prizes.

Jenny Morgan, the hotel’s business development manager, said: “The owners have invested heavily throughout the hotel, refurbishing many areas such as the health club, bedrooms, meeting rooms, and landscaping outdoor areas for wedding parties.

“The team work hard and are very proud of the standards and customer care we deliver to our guests. Our application for the awards this year has been very strong and has been supported by lots of exciting developments.”

JAK Hanson, in Wrightington, has earned a pick in the retail experience area.

One of the owners, Andrew Kenyon, said: “This was the first time we’ve entered the awards and it comes just after our fifth anniversary at Derby House so this is great news.

“We’ve come a long way in that time, from when there were just four of us starting out so this is a tribute to all the work which has been put in.”

Other nominees include Wignalls Yallo, based in Standish, which is one of six contenders in the Taste Lancashire Producer Award.

Meanwhile, Go Ape Rivington has secured plaudits in the small visitor attraction section.

Those competing will now have face-to-face interviews with judges, as well as mystery shopper visit, before the winners are announced at a dinner in November.

Rachel McQueen, chief executive of organisers Marketing Lancashire, added: “Our awards not only recognise the accomplishments of this year’s finalists, but applaud all those who work in this wonderfully diverse sector for their contribution to the prosperity of Lancashire.”
