Tributes paid to coroner Jennifer Leeming

Senior Coroner Professor Leeming was based at Paderborn House in Bolton for 17 years, during which time she heard countless Wigan inquests.

As a solicitor specialising in criminal law, Prof Leeming began first as a litigation partner in private practice and before moving to the Crown Prosecution Service.

In 2000 she was appointed as assistant deputy coroner for Manchester South where she served until she became a coroner for Manchester West in September 2001, an area which covers Wigan, Leigh, Bolton and Salford.

She previously served as a non-executive director of the East Cheshire NHS Trust, and in governance roles for the Council of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Following her death overnight between Wednesday, January 2 and Thursday, January 3, tributes have poured in from friends of Prof Leeming as well as local politicians and solicitors.

Marilyn Stowe, founder of Stowe Family Law firm, said: "Deepest condolences. A remarkable woman.

"It was wonderful to hear her son’s speech including a fantastic tribute to his beloved mum 2 months ago at his own wedding.

"Best groom’s speech I’ve ever heard. Glad she saw him so happily married."

Stephen Day, medical negligence partner at Leigh Day also paid tribute to Prof Leeming.

He added: "Very sad to hear of the death of Bolton Coroner Jennifer Leeming. She was always so kind to families and helped them through a very difficult process.

"I learnt a tremendous amount in her court, condolences to her family."
