Two dogs and a turtle rescued from Wigan pub fire

Firefighters from Wigan, Atherton and Leigh stations were called to the Earl of Balcarres premises in Scholes, shortly after 11pm yesterday.

A fire had broken out on the first floor, and the crews had to use breathing apparatus to gain entry and ventilate the building.

The firefighters rescued two dogs and a turtle, and the cause of the blaze is now under investigation.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 11.12pm on Tuesday, February 2, GMFRS were called to a fire involving a derelict pub in Scholes, Wigan.

"Fire engines from Wigan, Atherton and Leigh attended.

"The fire involved the first floor of the building and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire and ventilated the building.

"Crew rescued two dogs and a turtle from the building.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
