An “alternative garage” sale has been organised to raise much-needed cash for a struggling Wigan church.

Standish’s St Wilfrid’s Church launched a Crowdfunding appeal to raise money for its funds in May as it felt the brunt of lockdown measures.

The church had not been able to raise its usual funds due to the suspension of public services and the reduction in its collections, because of the coronavirus restrictions.

The building, which dates from 1584, is the only Grade One listed building in the whole of Wigan borough.

Each year it costs thousands of pounds to maintain.

And although lockdown restrictions have significantly eased and restricted church services can now take place, the church is still in need of money.

So a special event has been arranged at The Rectory, on 13 Rectory Lane, which will see jams and cakes sold to raise money for the church’s funds.

People can also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and social distancing will be maintained at all times.

All proceeds will go towards the church’s funds.

The event will take place from 10am to noon today (September 5).
