Investigation launched as passer-by sees fire in bedroom and calls 999

Firefighters rushed to a blaze at a terraced house when a member of the public spotted smoke and raised the alarm.

Fire engines from Hindley, Atherton and Farnworth stations went to the property on Gordon Street in Leigh at 9.35am on Friday.

A fire had broken out in a bedroom on the first floor of the house.

Martin Collinge, watch manager at Atherton fire station, said: "We got a call from a passer-by reporting that they could see smoke issuing from the building.

"On attendance we made entry and found the bedroom was on fire. There was no home owner in attendance."

The crews spent two hours tackling the fire, which damaged the bedroom and caused smoke damage to the first floor of the property.

An investigation is being carried out by the fire service and police to establish the cause.
