REVEALED: UK’s brutal verdict on these Wigan chip-shop favourites

And to get your taste buds tingling the rest of the country has given its brutal verdict on these Wigan chip-shop favourites.

These include Wigan's 'Pea Wet' which is the water juice surrounding mushy peas and 'Babies Yed' which consists of lamb or pig kidneys combined with diced beef and gravy in suet pastry.

To those residing outside of Wigan, 'Pea Wet' is a non-starter for 58 per cent of people who said they wouldn't be interested in trying it in a recent survey by kitchen retailer Wren Kitchens.

For 'Babies Yed' the response was mildly more fabourable, with 34 per cent of the UK thinking it sounds good but 55 per cent said they were not impressed.

The borough compares unfavourably with fish and chip delicacies elsewhere including in Yorkshire with the 60 per cent of those surveyed saying Yorkshire fishcakes sound nice and just 27 per cent saying they sound bad.

And Nottingham's mint sauce on mushy peas goes down well with 48 per cent giving their seal of approval and only 39 per cent turning their nose up at it.

There is some cheer though for Wiganers with 60 per cent of people giving the thumbs down to Scotland's traditional deep-fried chocolate and only 30 per cent liking it.

The survey results can be seen below while they also reveal what Wiganers are likely to call excess batter bits in their chippy and what their name would be for a bread roll.

So, just what does the UK think about Wigan’s ‘Pea Wet’?

To those residing outside of Wigan, Pea Wet is that watery ‘juice’ surrounding mushy peas.

The recent survey reveals that 58 per cent of the UK think this chip-shop item is a non-starter and wouldn’t be interested in trying it.

What about the local delicacy ‘Babies Yed’?

Again, for those of you out of the loop, Babies Yed is a pie which consists of lamb or pig kidneys combined with diced beef and gravy in suet pastry.

The response was a mildly more favourable verdict on this occasion, with 34 per cent of the UK thinking Babies Yed sounds good! But, unfortunately, an over-whelming 55 per cent were still not impressed.

So, do you order scraps or bits?

The study also reveals that Wigan likely calls excess batter bits ‘Scraps’ or ‘Bits’, compared to the south west and east of the UK who are more likely to order ‘Gribbles’ or ‘Scrumps’

Some 89 per cent of Northerners said they would order scraps or bits compared to just over five per cent who would order 'Gribbles or Scrumps.'

Contrast that to the south west and east of the UK where around 20 per cent call the batter bits 'Gribbles or Scrumps'.

And to answer an age-old debate… just what do we call a bread roll?

Bread roll with 26 per cent and bread bun at 30 per cent of those surveyed emerged as the most popular choices for Northerners.

Although people from Northern England are more likely to use the term 'barm cake' with nine per cent saying they would call it that compared to three per cent in the south east and five per cent in the south west.

People in the south west and south east are more likely to simply call a bread roll, well a bread roll, with 40 per cent and 45 per cent respectively naming it that.
