Slag Lane almost certainly has its roots in the area’s coal mining heritage. One theory behind its name involves the family of a local poet called John Byram who had the road covered in coal slag from nearby Bickershaw Colliery to stop it being a dirt track, with the road then becoming known as “The Slag Lane.”

As well as Slag Lane, there is also a Butts Avenue and Butts Street in Leigh and a Woodcock Drive in Platt Bridge and Hardybutts in Wigan.

Explaining why properties can increase based on what their street name is, Robby Du Toit, managing director of SellHouseFast, said: “Whilst it’s evident a ‘happy street name’ found in recent research by Bankrate can add value, you’d assume a ‘rude’ one would not.

“However, our findings indicate that there isn’t always a clear pattern and in fact they can add value to your home.
