Wigan teen condemned for climbing onto DW Stadium roof

A teen who prides himself in acts of death-defying trespass has now taken on Wigan’s premiere sports venue.

Despite widespread criticism, the youngster - who likes to go by the name of Silent Urbex - has continued to film himself putting his life in danger by scaling tall buildings and structures.

And his latest dubious “conquest” has been the top of the DW Stadium.

The venue is not in public use at present due to the Covid-19 restrictions, and the youth and an accomplice take advantage, scaling a wall and then clambering up metal ladders to get onto the gantries overlooking the pitches more than 100ft below.

At one point he climbs over the railings and hangs out with only one foot on the walkway and one hand gripping the bar. At another moment he sits on the roof to the away stand with his legs dangling over the edge. They escape using wheelie bins to get over one of the main gates, dodging barbed wire in the process.

It is understood that security improvements have now been carried out to thwart further intruders.

One reader who saw the footage posted on YouTube said: “They called it the DW Stadium Climb (Insane) and it is insane. These idiots are breaking the law and only luck will prevent them from one day breaking their necks - or suffering an even worse fate. I just hope they don’t put the emergency services at risk when it does happen to them.”

The same anonymous 17-year-old has also been filmed clinging one-handed from the top of the 196ft chimney at the derelict Pagefield building in Swinley.

Wigan Athletic declined to comment about the break-in and film at the DW Stadium.

In an interview with our sister paper the Wigan Observer earlier this month the thrill-seeker said: “I have been doing urban exploration for roughly three years and I have had many Instagram accounts blogging the places I explore and what it is that I do.

“I do also go to urban places quite often just to take photos and just have a fun time exploring around. Everywhere is completely different and holds a different story.

“It is a very dangerous thing to do and would not recommend anyone to go up there. As for the question of me being scared, heights do not bother me one bit so I had no issues hanging off the building.”
