Unpopular one-way system to be reversed

A ONE-way system in Tyldesley which many blame for causing congestion in the town centre is to be reversed.

Council chiefs will change the existing one-way order on Primrose Street.

Currently motorists can travel southbound on Primrose Street from Shuttle Street to Elliott Street.

However, from February 22 the one way system will switch to allow motorists to travel from Elliott Street to Shuttle Street instead.

Officials say the move will improve travel times by eliminating the shortcut between the two roads which had caused delays for motorists travelling from the Manchester direction on Elliott Street.

The measure will be in place on a temporary basis for the next 18 months. If it proves a success, council chiefs will consider making the route changes permanent.

And businesses are backing the change with support coming from Tyldesley Town Partnership.

Chairwoman Paula Wakefield said: “We welcome any measures which will help to improve free-flowing traffic here in Tyldesley.

“And by changing the direction of the one way system it will also mean that motorists will take in all businesses along Elliott Street and help raise awareness of the diverse economy we have here in Tyldesley.”

Coun Kevin Anderson, portfolio holder for environment, said: “We recognise how important it is to make our key roads into Wigan Borough free flowing and this change will not only improve one of the key roads for businesses and commuters but also help businesses in Tyldesley too.”

Residents can find out more about the scheme at The Deal in Action Have Your Say session on Wednesday, February 17 at Fred Longworth High School from 5.30pm.

Once the new one-way system is in force objections may be made to the order being made permanent and these must be made by August 22, 2016.

Any objections to the order must be made in writing and specify the grounds why the move is being objected to and can be sent to Assistant Director Legal, Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan quoting reference RD/LS/JCH/CL48.131.
